University Mental health Day 2020
Suicidal thoughts and attempts are a major concern for colleges and universities across the world today. According to the Office of National Statistics, one UK student commits suicide every fourth day (95 suicides per 100,000 students).
Studies in the U.S. show that alarming 80-90 percent of students who commit suicide were not receiving help from counseling centers at their universities.
Many students don’t seek help for mental health problems due to shame caused by mental illness stigma. Students with mental illness who feel unsupported by their university communities are more likely to isolate themselves, drop out of university, engage in self-harming behaviors, and attempt or commit suicide.
