Time to Talk Day 2020
In addition to mental health struggles, people with mental illness often have to fight stigma and discrimination attached to mental illness. Mental health stigma makes mental health problems worse, stops a person with mental illness from seeking support, and hinders their recovery.
Many people with mental illness report experiencing a mental illness-related stigma. They usually fail to seek professional help because of the shame or embarrassment that result from mental illness stigma. People with mental illness who feel unsupported by their family, community, or health care system are more likely to feel uncomfortable and unsafe. They often choose to seek relief in self-medicating or alcohol and drug abuse instead.
Talking openly about mental illness is essential in removing the stigma from mental health.
